In November of 1936, Manuel Chaves Nogales, disheartened by the course of the civil war, decides to leave Spain and go live with his family in Paris. Once there he collaborates with both French and Latin American presses, and even begins a small publication about the current Spanish situation aimed at Republican exiles. Knowing he has been targeted by the Gestapo, mere days before the Nazis invade Paris in 1940, Chaves Nogales leaves the city for Bordeaux and then London, where he will remain until his death. In this work, Chaves Nogales draws on his own knowledge as well as the numerous testimonials he had access to in Paris in order to try to explain the reasons that drove France to succumb to Fascism and sign an armistice with Germany in June of 1940.
